Impacts on Protective Structures against Gravitational Mass Movements—Scaling from Model Tests to Real Events

چکیده
Gravitational mass movements such as rockfalls, landslides, rock avalanches, or debris flows are increasingly endangering settlement areas and infrastructure facilities in the Alpine region a result of climate change. An essential component counteracting dangers events is construction suitable protective structures. However, dimensioning these structures requires in-depth knowledge impact process on structure. Measurements real large avalanches fail due to forces involved. For this reason, model tests have been carried out by different institutions countries recent decades. aspect study gravitational using experiments scaling experimental results events. Therefore, study, experiment at University Innsbruck was recalculated first step discrete element method (DEM). Subsequently, numerical DEM were scaled event scale factors then compared again. The aim show how well can be describe avalanches.

Gravitational Microlensing Events Due to Stellar Mass Black Holes
We present an analysis of the longest timescale microlensing events discovered by the MACHO Collaboration during a seven year survey of the Galactic bulge. We find six events that exhibit very strong microlensing parallax signals due, in part, to accurate photometric data from the GMAN and MPS collaborations. The microlensing parallax fit parameters are used in a likelihood analysis, which is a...
متن کاملThe Standard-Model Extension and Gravitational Tests
The Standard-Model Extension (SME) provides a comprehensive effective field-theory framework for the study of CPT and Lorentz symmetry. This work reviews the structure and philosophy of the SME and provides some intuitive examples of symmetry violation. The results of recent gravitational tests performed within the SME are summarized including analysis of results from the Laser Interferometer G...
متن کاملGalactic Structures from Gravitational Radii
We demonstrate that the existence of a Noether symmetry in f (R) theories of gravity gives rise to an additional gravitational radius, besides the standard Schwarzschild one, determining the dynamics at galactic scales. By this feature, it is possible to explain the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation and the rotation curve of gas-rich galaxies without the dark matter hypothesis. Furthermore, under ...
متن کاملBureaucratic Structures and Mass Casualty Events
In the preceding chapter, Carl Jensen reviewed the final reports issued by commissions investigating Pearl Harbor, the 9/11 attacks, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. These inquiries paint a grave picture of the ability of government to consistently recognize and understand looming threats and to respond to large-scale critical incidents. We must, of course, recognize that all three documents he...
متن کاملDetectability of gravitational wave events by spherical resonant-mass antennas.
We report on results of computer simulations of spherical resonant{mass gravitational wave antennas interacting with high{frequency radiation from astronomical sources. The antennas were simulated with three{mode inductive transducers placed on the faces of a truncated icosahedron. Overall, the spheres were modeled with a sensitivity of about three times the standard quantum limit. The gravitat...
